美国电影导演。1896年在电影创始时代起，就从事摄影与放映工作，是美国电影史上先驱人物。1900年前后，主持爱迪生实验室工作，着手摄制新闻纪录片。1903年开始导演影片。1911年离开爱迪生公司，就任雷克斯公司的导演。1903年执导了世界电影史上的经典影片《火车大劫案》，采用了分镜头法、内景与外景的迭印、移动镜头和大特写镜头，打破了梅里爱戏剧规则，创造出美国西部片的最初风格。主要作品还有：《基督山恩仇记》(1913)、《不朽的城市》等。
