A graduate of The National Film School Julian Richards short film trilogy Pirates (1988), Queen Sacrifice (1988) and Bad Company (1992) won several awards including Best Film at the British Short Film Festival before being televised by BBC Screenplay Firsts. His television career started when still only a first year student he was invited to direct "Wales Playhouse: In with the Rent (#1.3)" (????) for BBC Wales. After film school Julian directed A Mutter of Voices (1994) (TV) a docu-drama about genocide in Rwanda for BBC2, and twelve episodes of Liverpool soap "Brookside" (1982) for Channel Four. In 1994 Julian adapted the novel "Calling All Monsters" for Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment and in 1996 he wrote and directed his debut feature film Darklands (1996) starring Jon Finch, Rowena King and Craig Fairbrass. This brooding tale of underground paganism won The Melies D'Argent for Best European Fantasy Film 1997. Richards second feature, conspiracy thriller Silent Cry (2002) starring Emily Woof, Douglas Henshall, Frank Finlay and Kevin Whately was awarded The Gold Remi at Worldfest Houston and his third feature, serial killer shockumentary The Last Horror Movie (2003) won fourteen awards including Best UK Feature at Raindance and The Melies D'Argent for Best European Fantasy Film 2005. In 2007 Richards produced and directed his fourth feature, the coming-of-age thriller Summer Scars (2007) which won two British Academy Awards. In 2008 Richards directed Derek Jacobi in Charles Dickens's England (2009), a feature length documentary about the life of Charles Dickens and in 2010 he directed Danielle Harris, John Jarratt, Casper Van Dien and Rae Dawn Chong in the psychological thriller Shiver (2011). Julian also runs the international sales agency Jinga Films and has worked as writing consultant on Panic Button (2011) and editing consultant on Tulpa (2012).
